Negotiate Hospital Bills? Is it true that people are calling up their hospital after receiving a bill and negotiating to pay less than the total if they pay right then and there? What is the best way to do this and what might savings might I expect or hope for?

Some people know to do this, but most don’t. If you need help paying your portion of the hospital bill you should call the billing office and set up a payment plan. And absolutely ask if they would be willing to reduce your co-pay amount. Some hospitals have policies in place that will give uninsured patients an immediate discount. While other hospitals will discount co-pays if you pay that day. BE CAREFUL about putting your payment on your credit card since this is considered unforgivable debt, and once the amount is set up with your credit card you can’t negotiate it down. Set up a payment plan instead.
